It faces the Place du Palais-Royal, a square which was much enlarged by Baron Haussmann after the Rue de Rivoli was built for Napoleon. Palais-Royal was once the Paris seat of the Dukes of Orleans and the cadet branch of the ruling House of Bourbon, beginning with Louis XIV's brother, Philippe. The Rococo style of this Palais Royal Collection takes pleasure in asymmetry, or 'contraste' - the practice of leaving elements unbalanced for effect. Accent carvings and details are seamlessly integrated into a flow of opposed c-scrolls and 'rocaille.'
